SHIPWRECKS OF THE NEW JERSEY COAST

Some 3700 vessels, of all types, met their fate off of New Jersey’s treacherous shorelines. Many dating from colonial times, and some still filled with hidden treasures. For over 400 years ships of all shapes and sizes have run aground along our coast from Sandy Hook down to cape May point due to the shifting shoals and many sand bars around our inlets. The Barnegat area in particular, with its shifting sands, was notorious for causing many an unwary sailor to unwittingly reef his craft. Our coastline has long been known as the world’s most dangerous, and there are many nautical narratives spun about the seas off the Garden State.
